Position Title: Executive Director – Amboseli Ecosystem Trust

The Amboseli Ecosystem Trust (AET)to coordinate the sustainable and participatory management
of the Amboseli Ecosystem, aiming at a reduction in land fragmentation, degradation, and
habitat loss across the landscape in order to keep the Amboseli Ecosystem rangelands open,
diverse and healthy for the benefit of people and wildlife.

The Position:

The AET wishes to fill the vacant position of Executive Director (ED), to be responsible for the
overall direction, coordination, evaluation, and planning of AET’s programs and projects as well
as oversight and supervision of AET staff. Specifically, the ED will take the lead in;
Driving the organization to achieve its goals and objectives by ensuring that AET’s Strategic Plan is developed and implemented,
Promoting and championing the vision and objectives of AET’s Strategic Plan to National and County governments, donors, civil society, corporates, and all Amboseli Ecosystem stakeholders,
Mobilizing for resources and building networks and partnerships to support the mission of AET in the management of the Amboseli Ecosystem
Hiring, developing, leading and coordinating all project and technical personnel as well as third parties (e.g., consultants and contractors), ensuring that projects are incorporated into a coherent work plan with clear priorities for members of the AET team, and oversees their efficient implementation,
Developing, maintaining, and supporting a strong Board of Trustees; serving as the secretary to the board and as a member of each committee, seeking to build board involvement with strategic direction for the organization,
Developing and ensuring strategic engagement with relevant international and national stakeholders on policy advocacy, mobilization, conservation and technical issues
Coordinating the implementation, reviewing and adapting the Amboseli Ecosystem Management Plan (AEMP), aiming at strengthening the desire for open connected landscapes among the diverse interest groups,
Facilitating the development and implementation of a monitoring and reporting system that ensures the very best practice in project management, and that provides timely reports according to the formats and schedules set forth by the AET board and the AEMP Plan Implementation Committee (PIC),
Managing all financial obligations of AET (fund-raising, budgeting, audits and reporting), and ensuring appropriate policies and procedures are developed and implemented (Financial, administrative and HR),
Developing and maintaining a robust communications platform in support of projects and partnerships,
Ensuring that all activities are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget.
Perform any other task that may be assigned by the Board of Trustees according to organizational needs.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate must have a deep appreciation for and commitment to the work and mission
of AET. All candidates should have a strong vocational interest in wildlife conservation, proven
leadership skills as well as experience in building up and managing strong teams and effectively
coordinating networks of diverse stakeholders, in addition to;
Advanced university degree in an appropriate field (wildlife management, conservation / environment / natural resource management / terrestrial ecology). Additional academic training or a degree in a management field would be a strong asset;
Proven track record in successfully developing, leading, and managing projects in the field of conservation, natural resources management, and/or other related fields;
At least 7 years professional experience in a leadership/management role, with demonstrated success in managing multi-disciplinary teams and multi-donor projects
Knowledge of the international development and conservation community in Kenya and especially the Amboseli/Tsavo Ecosystem
Knowledge of wildlife and conservation policy issues in Kenya in particular and East Africa in general;
Excellent written and spoken English and Kiswahili languages, as well as working knowledge of Maa;
Strong experience working with multi-stakeholders and donors community;
Strong inter-personal skills, with the ability to network and to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels, both internally and with local communities, government agencies, the not-for- profit sector, the scientific community, and the donor network;
Adherence to AET’s values and core competencies; which are collaboration, transparency, equality, dynamism, advocacy and fairness.
